Ian Vickers gave a great message this week from Hebrews 12:1-3. Ian operates a non-profit organization called Global Partners in Hope.

Happy Mother's Day! We had the "mom band" playing today, and they did great! Michelle sounded awesome on the Martina McBride song we did before the service.

Colossians 3:16 says: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God."

As we sang "All to You" by Lincoln Brewster, we admonished/encouraged one another to live our whole lives for God, holding nothing back. As we sang "In Christ Alone" by Keith and Kristen Getty, we taught and re-taught the gospel story to one another: that Jesus is our only hope, that he died on the cross to satisfy the wrath of God, that he rose victoriously over death, and that guilt and fear are overcome by the power of God. Amen!

We shared an amazing testimony from Candy Work, who was adopted as a child. One of our "theme songs" at Journey is "The Power of Your Name" by Lincoln Brewster. We sang that song as a response to her testimony, declaring our desire to be people who carry the Lord's compassion in love to a world that is broken.

After the sermon, we responded with Matt Redman's "You Alone Can Rescue." It was a great morning with the gathered church!

We filled the stage this week - Bass, Drums, Keys, Two Acoustics, Electric, Violin, Two Vocals, and I played both acoustic and electric. It was a great morning! We dealt with grief and Jesus' reaction to it in the story of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. My favorite metaphor from Phil's sermon was that of a fighter preparing for a fight. It reminded me of the weigh in events the week before a big fight. Having the fighters in the same room right before the event is great for publicity but not so great for anyone standing between the two men. Often these scenes turn into small previews of the main event, and some promoter always gets knocked out. This is a little like Jesus' encounter with death - it's not the main event, but you can feel the tension. Jesus felt it. So did Lazarus. Poor Lazarus.

Valentine's day! This week, Phil and Jim were both out of town, so Todd Baker gave the sermon, and it was pretty great. Check it out over at the Journey Church website. Christmas is here! We kicked off Journey's first Christmas with an old fashioned sing-a-long. It was fun to have a few extra singers this week (it was not a choir! haha).

This week we talked about LUST. Since there are so few lustful songs to play as intro music......yeah.

Before jumping into the song list, I want to highlight a couple worship albums that I would recommend. We will be singing songs from both of these albums in the future, so if you listen to them now, you will be ahead of the game when we introduce the songs as new!
The first is Matt Maher's Alive Again. This album has several good corporate worship songs, along with several good songs for personal listening. Check out No Greater Love for a great cross centered anthem.
The second album I would suggest buying right this second is Matt Redman's We Shall Not Be Shaken. This album is full of cross centered worship songs that connect the truth of scripture to excellent, current music. Redman has a gift for making simple truths come alive in song. We will definitely be visiting this album again and again over the next few years.

This week was the beginning of a new series called Uncomfortable. We will be looking at the sermon on the mount from Matthew 5-7. Often times the things Jesus calls us to do or be make us uncomfortable because it seems an impossible task. I'm looking forward to this series!

This was our last week of our Fight Club sermon series. This has been a fun series, so it was bitter sweet for me. However, we fittingly ended the series with an instrumental version of Battle Hymn of the Republic before the service. Andy did a great job on saxophone, and big thanks to the Gretna High School Band for borrowing us a marching snare drum for the morning!

This week we stripped the band back for an acoustic set. It really helped bring us back to our foundations - get at the heart of what we sing about. Here were our songs:

We also had to find an instrumental "fight song" to go with our series, which presented a challenge when doing an acoustic set. Our focus in this week's service was on purity. We continued in 2 Timothy, hinging on 2:22 - "Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts." Paul instructs Timothy to pursue righteous living - not as a way of being right with God - but in response to God's grace. We worshiped the God of grace through these songs:

We kicked off our new series, Fight Club, with some rock anthems! Ok, In Christ Alone isn't necessarily a "rock" anthem, but it always feels like it when we get to the sweet words of verse 3 and 4 - "As he stands in victory, sin's curse has lost it's grip on me." Those words should rise emotion in us like a fourth quarter game winning touchdown pass! We will be camping in 2 Timothy for the remaining five weeks of this series, and you can probably expect a few more anthems to come - and another fight song or two along the way.

He is heading back out on the road again this Friday, and he will be in the UK and Japan for the next couple weeks, so if you think of it, pray for him.

We started the morning with a bit of live music - usually we do a pre-service instrumental, but today we added a song from the band By the Tree called "Hold You High." It was a fun, loud song to start the morning with, and it definitely signaled the start of the service to all the coffee drinkers.

This week was the first Sunday of a new series: Hello! My Name Is: God. The series will focus on who God is using a different Psalm each week. This week's Psalm was Psalm 103, which happens to be one of my favorites.

This week was an acoustic setup with Cody on acoustic guitar, Tony on the Cajon (hand drum), and Louise on vocals. It was fun to scale the band back and hear more of Journey's voices!
