May 9

Happy Mother's Day! We had the "mom band" playing today, and they did great! Michelle sounded awesome on the Martina McBride song we did before the service.

Colossians 3:16 says: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God."

As we sang "All to You" by Lincoln Brewster, we admonished/encouraged one another to live our whole lives for God, holding nothing back. As we sang "In Christ Alone" by Keith and Kristen Getty, we taught and re-taught the gospel story to one another: that Jesus is our only hope, that he died on the cross to satisfy the wrath of God, that he rose victoriously over death, and that guilt and fear are overcome by the power of God. Amen!

We shared an amazing testimony from Candy Work, who was adopted as a child. One of our "theme songs" at Journey is "The Power of Your Name" by Lincoln Brewster. We sang that song as a response to her testimony, declaring our desire to be people who carry the Lord's compassion in love to a world that is broken.

After the sermon, we responded with Matt Redman's "You Alone Can Rescue." It was a great morning with the gathered church!

May 2

This week we started the service with "Give Me Your Eyes" by Brandon Heath. I love this song, because it reminds us to see the people all around us the way God sees them. I know I could use that reminder on a daily basis!

Then we did:
Holy - Brenton Brown
Jesus Paid It All - Hymn
From the Inside Out - Joel Houston
You Are the One - David Potter

April 25

Psalm 124:
1 What if the Lord had not been on our side?
  Let all Israel repeat:
2 What if the Lord had not been on our side
  when people attacked us?
3 They would have swallowed us alive
  in their burning anger.
4 The waters would have engulfed us;
a torrent would have overwhelmed us.
5 Yes, the raging waters of their fury
would have overwhelmed our very lives.

6 Praise the Lord ,
who did not let their teeth tear us apart!
7 We escaped like a bird from a hunter's trap.
The trap is broken, and we are free!
8 Our help is from the Lord ,
  who made heaven and earth.

On Our Side - Chris Tomlin
You Never Let Go - Matt Redman
You Alone Can Rescue - Matt Redman

April 11

We filled the stage this week - Bass, Drums, Keys, Two Acoustics, Electric, Violin, Two Vocals, and I played both acoustic and electric. It was a great morning! We dealt with grief and Jesus' reaction to it in the story of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. My favorite metaphor from Phil's sermon was that of a fighter preparing for a fight. It reminded me of the weigh in events the week before a big fight. Having the fighters in the same room right before the event is great for publicity but not so great for anyone standing between the two men. Often these scenes turn into small previews of the main event, and some promoter always gets knocked out. This is a little like Jesus' encounter with death - it's not the main event, but you can feel the tension. Jesus felt it. So did Lazarus. Poor Lazarus.

Here were our songs:
All Things New - Andrew Peterson (This was our gathering song)
Everlasting God - Lincoln Brewster
We Shall Not be Shaken - Matt Redman
Through it All - Matt Redman
The Love of God - Lincoln Brewster (Also a performance song)
Your Grace Is Enough - Matt Maher

Valentine's day! This week, Phil and Jim were both out of town, so Todd Baker gave the sermon, and it was pretty great. Check it out over at the Journey Church website. Our band was a little different this week too. We traded out our loud drum kit for beautiful cello and violin sounds. It was, at times, powerful. I love those instruments.

Here were our songs:
Because of Your Love - Paul Baloche
Beautiful One - Tim Hughes
Offering - Paul Baloche
Jesus Paid it All - Hymn
All I Have Is Yours - Sojourn

January 31

Wow - what a blessing it was to have Sharon Jackson with us this weekend. Sharon is an old friend of mine, and she was gracious enough to fit our service into her weekend away with her family. She lives and leads worship in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Everlasting God - Lincoln Brewster
How Deep the Father's Love for Us - Stuart Townend

January 24

With all the craziness in the world right now, we decided to take a week and sing songs around the theme of God's greatness and control. My favorite lyric this week: "Nations could be quaking, economies failing, when fear is found all around, You're the common ground." How true!

Let the Praises Ring - Lincoln Brewster
You Are Good - Israel Houghton (Lincoln Brewster arr)
We Shall Not Be Shaken - Matt Redman
Your Name - Paul Baloche
The Power of Your Name - Lincoln Brewster
I Surrender All - Traditional Hymn

January 17

This week we continued our study of Exodus with chapter 3 - God reveals his name to Moses. As a side note, we gave our entire offering to Haiti relief - almost $6000! This is just another reason why I love our church.

Here were our songs:
All to You - Lincoln Brewster
The Kingdom of God - Paul Baloche
Not to Us - Chris Tomlin
God You Reign - Lincoln Brewster
Revelation Song - Kari Jobe
O Sing the Greatness - David Potter, Fanny Crosby

January 10

This week we continued in our Exodus series. I am really enjoying this study - Phil is doing a great job re-telling the story. He made a really great observation from a text in Acts that relates to Exodus. If you weren't at Journey this week, you can always listen to Phil's sermons on our website, journeychurchne.org.

All Because of Jesus - Fee
I Will Boast - Paul Baloche
'Til I See You - Hillsong United
Majesty (Here I Am) - Delirious?
God of this City - Chris Tomlin (original version by Blue Tree)
